What can I afford?
A budget estimate using the same stress test and debt limits Canadian lenders use.
How lenders decide
Lenders test you at a higher rate than you'll pay: the greater of your rate plus 2%, or 5.25%. At that rate, your housing costs (mortgage, property tax, heating and half of any condo fees) generally can't exceed 39% of gross income, and housing plus all other debts can't exceed 44%. Your down payment also caps the price, because of the minimum down payment rules.
Estimates only, for planning. Rates and rules as published by the Government of Ontario, the City of Toronto, CMHC, FCAC and OSFI, checked October 2026. Your lender, mortgage broker and real estate lawyer will confirm the real numbers. Place Your Own Real Estate Ad Here Inc., Brokerage does not give mortgage or tax advice.
